Commercials &
Industrials
Commercials and Industrials are a bit tricky as one has limited time to tell a story - both in terms of screen time and in terms of preparation and build time.
They can be like running down a cliff, or taking the Ice bucket challenge: things change on the fly quickly and you must expect the unexpected.
Some of the best war stories in the industry come from commercials.
What I love about them the most is that they often employ one of my strongest skills: quick creative problem solving.
really great spots are about really great collaborations. On this spot was very glad to work with Don Bies and his Whiteroom team.
ahhh. the white set. everyone does one at some point in time. here's mine!!
there's a fair amount of talking heads in industrials; the challenge is to engage the viewer and also to present the product in the best possible view.
nine sets in two days at the beautiful Craneway pavilion in Richmond. great crew we really delivered the good for this epic spot. Garrett Lowe art director Emily Hastings set dec Emily Rolph co-ord Josh Frager leadman Cinque Marshall swing
sometimes industrials are about providing backgrounds. in this case we wanted something "sciencey" so I built a set out of lucite paneling and twin wall, and filled it with pretty lights. pretty!!
this lovely spot was designed by Jona Tochet, and represents the kind of really beautiful work she and I have done together. The Spot was fun, fast and just a little crazy; you can see us moving stuff around. I built most of the oversize technology, and we filmed it at ILM in their last few days. it features elements built at 1.5x, 2x, and 4x scale. saddly, this spot has been taken down....
Another great piece with designer Jona Tochet ; we had assembled an amazing crew of highly skilled artists to make this happen. this shot in particular was my favorite, as the forklift had to race through the door unmanned. After several attempts at remote controlling, we finally just put a brick on the accelerator and had it race through the opening door; I was off camera to jump on and drive it back safely. i do my own stunts!!!
